Luoping Buyi Taste and Culture Experience
Food Culture
Five-color flower rice: This is a traditional delicacy of the Buyi ethnic group, which has a history of nearly 1,000 years. Every year on the third day of the third lunar month, the Buyi people pick edible wild plants, mash their stems, flowers, and leaves as dye, and use them to soak glutinous rice to make red, purple, black, white, and yellow flower rice. Each color has its symbolic meaning, such as black symbolizes life, red symbolizes joy, yellow symbolizes sincerity, purple symbolizes auspiciousness, and white symbolizes purity. Flower rice is not only bright in color but also has a long taste, is a real pollution-free green food, and also has certain medicinal effects.

Buyi sour bamboo shoot fish: sour and hot appetizing, fresh and tender fish, is a local specialty.

Other special foods: The Buyi people take rice as the staple food, especially glutinous food, and there are a variety of production methods, such as glutinous rice dumplings, round sugar cakes, ear lump cakes, pillow dumplings and triangular rice dumplings. Glutinous rice must be eaten during the New Year's holidays, and glutinous rice cakes are given to relatives and friends. In addition, every Buyi household can make glutinous rice wine, rice, corn shochu, and some places also make glutinous rice roast cellar wine, tobacco kernel rice wine, cane sugar wine, etc., which are quite distinctive.
Traditional Festivals
Lunar "March 3rd": This is the most grand, lively, and passionate traditional festival of the Buyi people, mainly to worship the mountain god or sweep the village to drive away ghosts, and wish for a good harvest. During the festival, the Buyi people hold a mountain sacrifice ceremony, hoping that the whole village will be blessed with longevity and health, smooth wind and rain, and abundant grains. The sacrificial pigs, sheep, and chickens are slaughtered at the site of the sacrificial ceremony, and after slaughtering, they are cooked on the mountain, and the pig's head, sheep's head, and whole chicken are sacrificed to the mountain god. At the same time, this day is also a good time for young men and women to court and find their lovers.

"April 8th": It is a festival to commemorate the ploughing cattle, and this festival is called "Cattle King Festival" or "Shepherd Boy Festival" and "Seedling Opening Festival" in various parts of the Buyi nationality. On this day, every family eats "Niu Wang Ba" and glutinous rice, and feeds the cows with it, so that the cows can rest for a day and bathe the cows in water with maple leaves.
"June 6": Sacrifice to the god of the field, the god of the land, and the god of the mountain. After the sacrifice, various colored paper flags are stained with chicken blood or made into a big bird shape and inserted in each field. At the same time, a "meeting of the hammer" is held to announce various hammer rules and regulations, and the hammer supervises the implementation of the hammer, so as to protect the safety of social property. In many places, large-scale mountain activities are also held.
