Crafting Timeless Beauty – My Black Pottery Experience in Jianshui

When traveling through Jianshui, Yunnan, I came across something extraordinary: Jianshui Black Pottery (Black Clay). Unlike ordinary pottery, this traditional craft is made with purple clay, polished to a mirror-like finish without any glaze. The result is a deep, elegant black shine that feels timeless and mysterious.

I signed up for a black pottery workshop at a local studio hidden in one of Jianshui’s old alleys. The moment I stepped inside, the smell of clay and the sight of spinning pottery wheels instantly transported me into another world.
The master potter, with clay-stained hands and a warm smile, guided me step by step. First, we kneaded the clay until it was soft and elastic. Then came the most exciting part – placing the lump on the wheel. As the wheel spun, my hands slowly shaped the clay into a small teacup. The master occasionally adjusted my posture, reminding me, “Let the clay breathe with your fingers.”
After shaping, the pot was polished with smooth river stones. This is the secret of Jianshui black pottery – no glaze is used, only careful polishing to achieve that shining black finish. Holding the cup in my hands, I felt a sense of pride: this was not just pottery, but a small piece of history shaped by my own touch.
What I loved most about this experience was the connection it created. I wasn’t just learning a craft – I was touching centuries of culture, patience, and artistry. The Hani and Yi people have passed down this skill for generations, and each piece of pottery carries stories of family, tea, and daily life.
If you ever visit Jianshui, I highly recommend trying black pottery making yourself. It’s not only fun, but also a moment of mindfulness – a chance to slow down, breathe, and create something with your own two hands.
